Reading Abbey

You don’t have to be religious to find an abbey or an old church fascinating. There is so much history and each church or abbey has its own special story which makes it hard to drive right past one when out sightseeing.

Even if you are not at all interested in religion, visiting old churches is a captivating experience to simply take the opportunity to examine the old architecture and marvel at how these huge stone buildings, which were built thousands of years ago, were constructed.

If you are out sightseeing, hopefully you are in a chauffeur driven limousine as not only do you not have to worry about following road maps and driving unfamiliar roads you also don’t have to worry about how long you spend wandering through old churches as you don’t have to stay alert to drive home.

If you are passing through Berkshire on a day of sightseeing, you won’t be able to go past the Reading Abbey. The Reading Abbey is a collection of buildings on a 30 acre site which dominated the town from 1121, until its dissolution by Henry VIII in 1539.

While the buildings now lie in ruins after their sad fate, St Laurence’s Church was built shortly after in its place to serve the people of Reading and the guesthouse and inner gatehouse are still standing.

The founder of the Abbey Church, Henry I, was buried at the site in 1136, and a remarkable ancient musical composition also originated from the Abbey in around 1240.

So while you may not be a religious person, there is plenty of our country’s history tied up in the ruins of the Reading Abbey, waiting for you to discover.
