Hybrid Commodores on the Way

People want to do the right thing for the environment – we sort our paper from our plastic, we walk to the shops instead of taking the car and we change our gas guzzler in the driveway to a hybrid or electric car. Right? Well not all of us.

At the moment there is a very limited range of hybrid vehicles out there to choose from and they do not suit everyone’s tastes or everyone’s needs and while we don’t deny that we care for the environment, not everyone wants a Toyota in their garage. Australia is an excellent indicator of this because while they are one of the places where the hole in the ozone is the worst, they still have an affinity to their locally manufactured ‘icon’ vehicles, like the Commodore.

The Holden Commodore is an icon in Australia and it is about a lot more than getting from A to B. Most people Down Under have owned, or at least driven a Holden at some stage of their lives, so it is no surprise that instead of trying to bring Australian drivers to the hybrids, manufacturers are bringing the hybrids to the drivers.

Holden have recently announced that they are planning to sell as hybrid version of their most popular vehicle by 2010. The hybrid Commodore is also expected to increase the potential of exports for the locally made vehicle.

As one of the first hybrids to be seen in Australia by GM, the Commodore will have a lot to live up to. The electric motor is expected to reduce fuel consumption by 50%, not to mention improve Holden’s environmentalist image as the hybrid is expected to be just one part of a new line of more fuel efficient vehicles.
